UMTS/3G Architecture

Image
The UMTS network can be broadly divided into- User Equipment(UE) Radio Network Subsystem(RNS) Core Network(CN) UMTS/3G Architecture User Equipment(UE)   : USIM(Universal Subscriber Identity Module) :Same as SIM card, But in case of UMTS it is termed as USIM. ME(Mobile Equipment)  :Hardware used by subscriber containing IMEI.       2. Radio Network Subsystem(RNS)   : Also known as UMTS Radio Access Network,(UTRAN).It            provides and  manage the air interface for the overall network. Node B  : Node B corresponds to BTS in GSM. RNC(Radio Network Controller)  :It controls Node B in 3G telecom system.       3. Core Network(CN)  : Circuit Switch Domain  :A permanent channel for the duration of the call. MSC(Mobile Switching Centre)  :it manage the circuit switched calls under way. GMSC(Gateway Mobile Switching Centre)  :Responsible for obtaining the location of su...

GSM/2G Architecture

Image
The GSM network can be broadly divided into- Mobile Station(MS) Base Station Sub-System(BSS) Network Switching Sub-System(NSS) Operation Support Sub-System(OSS) GSM/2G Architecture Mobile Station  :   ME(Mobile Equipment)  :Hardware used by subscriber containing IMEI(International Mobile Equipment Identity). SIM(Subscriber Identity Module)  :Detachable smart card containing IMSI(International Mobile Subscriber Identity).      2.   Base Station Subsystem  : BTS(Base Transceiver Station)  :Sends & Receives signals from MS. Also does Encoding, Multiplexing, Encryption, Modulation, ..etc. BSC(Base Station Controller)  :Controls group of BTS, Allocation of radio channels, Handover from one BTS to another.      3. Network Switching Subsystem  : MSC(Mobile Switching Centre)  :Performs call routing, call setup & call switching. Communicates with other NSS component like HLR ,VLR, AUC &EIR, Management of...
